Invisibility of Asperger's delays treatment

TAMSEN TILLSON

JOURNAL OF ADDICTION AND MENTAL HEALTH
November/December 1999

WHEN JAMIE* WAS SEVEN YEARS old, he smiled broadly upon hearing that his aunt had injured herself in a fall. When his mother Barb* pointed out that it wasn't right to smile when someone was hurt, he asked, "Should I be sad?" and the grin then instantly disappeared.
While these tendencies suggested autism, the fact that he could speak at age two led doctors to reject that label in favour of attention- deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It wasn't until Jamie was nine that he was finally diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder (PDD), an umbrella term that includes his actual condition -- Asperger's disorder.
